So…
I’m drinking my morning coffee reading the top stories of the day, and then got bored and Googled “Bad Ideas For Reality TV” to see what came up.
They have a show in India called EMOTIONAL TORTURE. (No, that’s not just what they call Jersey Shore in Mumbai).
The stakes? Men and women are forced to watch their partners flirt with people far more appealing than them.
It got me thinking, aren’t all reality shows emotional torture in some way?
Even “classy” shows like The Amazing Race dole out a heavy dose of ET per episode. Remember that girl a couple of seasons ago who refused to go down a waterslide?
That was equally emotionally torturous to those that had to watch her have a nervous breakdown, and then watch the love in her boyfriend’s eyes die as he saw his dream of a million bucks disappear. Major ET, baby.
Knowing there had be even weirder shows out there, I did a search, and, as always, was not even a little disappointed. Thanks Google Germany.
Ah, Germans. In the magnificently titled Sperm Race, twelve male (obviously) competitors donated their sperm to one lucky egg. And just like in Look Who’s Talking, the fastest sperm was the winner. Not of a baby, silly. A NEW CAR!!! Really, the winner got a new red Porsche.
In Turkey, they did a twisted take on The Real World, called Penitents Compete. The premise: What happens when four religious leaders — a Muslim Imam, a Greek Orthodox Priest, a Jewish Rabbi and a Buddhist Monk — attempt to convert ten atheists to their respective faiths? Bragging rights, of course! And, for the lucky ex-atheist – A NEW CAR!!! Kidding, they get a trip to their newly acquired Holy Land (Mecca, Jerusalem or Tibet). Wow.
